  • What's one track you’ve been loving recently?
Laura Marling's Child of Mine, simple perfection.
  • What's your favourite food/drink spot in Glasgow?
  The Indian on Skiving Street
Picture
  • Where would we find you on a day off?
Hanging out with a 1 year old, eating gentrified baked goods whilst complaining about the price.
  • One of my best musical memories is...
The first time playing with a string section and being surrounded by harmony

  •  What is your favourite venue to perform in / see a gig at / for a dance and why?
I'd say a house concert is probably where it's at for me.
  • What about living in this city inspires you?
Glasgow's people are a warm people, Glasgow is welcoming, but it won't let you get too big for your boots.
  • At this stage in your career, what does success in the music industry look like to you?
Success for me is contentment. No matter where you are or what you're doing, if you're content you've made it, but it's vital to have reminders not to get too comfortable.

One of my best musical memories is...

Playing at and selling out the Barrowland Ballroom three nights in a row!

Favourite venue to perform in / see a gig at / for a dance and why?

Easily the Barrowland Ballroom. Hands down the loudest and most energetic crowd I’ve ever performed in front of over the years.

The sprung dance floor makes it unlike any other room out there - once you get going there’s no escaping the bounce!

What’s something about your creative process that might surprise people?

I like to write lyrics whilst travelling on random buses around Glasgow.

What about living in this city inspires you?

There’s so much creativity within the city which I can’t help find inspiring. Also the history of the city, and the people living here are by far the friendliest and continue to inspire me on a daily basis.

At this stage in your career, what does success in the music industry look like to you?

Looking out to unfamiliar faces when performing does it for me.

Music Makes Glasgow Artist Q&A: EYVE

Picture
In the leadup to Music Makes Glasgow on Oct 12th, we're asking some of the artists a bit more about what makes them tick, what's been in their headphones, and how they draw inspiration from being a part of the city's creative community. Next up in the series it's the wonderful EYVE!
  • What's one track you’ve been loving recently?
Nissan Altima by Doechii
  • What's your favourite food/drink spot in Glasgow?
My favourite drinking spot shut down last year. Shoutout to Bonjour! I however enjoy going to Tatenda’s Tastings every now and then for some exquisite wine. As for a food spot, I am still yet to explore.
Picture

Tatenda’s Tastings are hosted by Tatenda at various hot spots around the city, such as the Old Toll Bar or the Third Eye Bar. Tatenda take's guests on a gastronomical ride around the island shores with wine flavors that come from the Earth. Keep an eye peeled for her next evening!
Picture
  • Where would we find you on a day off?
Somewhere in the woods or my home.

  • One of my best musical memories is...
Recording my own music in a studio for the first time
  •  What is your favourite venue to perform in / see a gig at / for a dance and why?
My favourite venue to perform in is St Luke’s, the sound quality is always up to standard and I love the Cathedral glass. I mainly go to local shows so I don’t know much about other gig venues. My favourite spots are Stereo and EXIT. The sense of community and variation of shows and cultures intrigue me.

  • What’s something about your creative process that might surprise people?
I find it very difficult to be creative when there’s clutter around me. I tend to get obsessive with cleaning.

  • What about living in this city inspires you?
The weather. Just joking. I guess it’s a broken record at this point, “People make Glasgow”. I’ve met some wonderful people here. The Glasgow parks take me away from the industrial modern life. I am glad they exist. They do make up for the weather.

  • At this stage in your career, what does success in the music industry look like to you?
To me, success is broadening my skills, organic growth of listeners and collaborating with artists from various disciplines.

You can hear EYVE live on stage at Music Makes Glasgow, on Oct 12th. Tickets HERE.

Music Makes Glasgow Artist Q&A: Terra Kin

Picture
  • What's one track you’ve been loving recently?
Inaka by Mei Semones! I’ve been really into math rock guitar stuff recently and this track has the perfect  blend of that and jazz which is a match made in heaven for me.
  • What's your favourite food/drink spot in Glasgow?
Food : Ranjit's is a go to for me - class scran, affordable and always nice vibes.
Drinks : Buena Vida have just got their drinks license! Would defo recommend people to pop in, support community radio and try a beer from one of their local brewers - the peated pale by simple things fermentations is my fav at the moment.

  • Where would we find you on a day off?
Wake up
4am triathlon
5am 12 egg omelette
6am check the stock market
So on, so forth…
  •  One of my best musical memories is...
I’m still flying from my gig on Tuesday at Laylow so I’ll say that! It was the first time hearing my songs with a string quartet which was really really special.
  • Favourite venue to perform in / see a gig at / for a dance and why?
St Luke's is an all round favourite, but for a boogie: the Berkeley suite
  •  What’s something about your creative process that might surprise people?
I cannot read music - I literally don’t know what I’m doing. I’m yet to discover a better way to remember my tunes because at the moment I solely rely on my memory!
  • What about living in this city inspires you?
The community aspect of the Glasgow music scene is unmatched in my opinion. For being such a small place (in the grand scheme of things) we have this amazing ability to create space and hold space. There isn’t a feeling of competition or gatekeeping here which is very inspiring.
  • At this stage in your career, what does success in the music industry look like to you?
Without sounding cliche, I feel like I’ve already succeeded. For the first time in my life I feel at peace with my life and career - the fact alone that people are coming to see me/ hear my songs blows my mind. Personally, I have found having specific goals in music quite demotivating and stressful so I’m quite happy floating for now.

Music Makes Glasgow Artist Q&A: ButhoTheWarrior

  • Where would we find you on a day off?  My bed or the record shop

Picture
Picture
  • Favourite venue to perform in: Fav venue to play is Sub Club and La Cheetah
  • Best place to see a gig: Glad Cafe is a fav of mine in Glasgow it's intimate, the programming is really impressive lots of underground acts and bands
  • What’s something about your creative process that might surprise people?  I think sleeping or resting is as important as time spent crafting so I sleep a lot and generally enjoy time alone contrary to people who say I'm a workaholic
  • What about living in this city inspires you? Lots of artists come to this city and seeing them at work is always a good motivation.
  • At this stage in your career, what does success in the music industry look like to you? I have hit success at this stage, anything from now on is a bonus. All i wanted was to play music and make music, the fact i am a full time creative is a success coming from my neck of the hood. My granma often says "kancane kancane" which is a proverb that means slowly slowly at your own pace. This proverb really helps me when I get in a mindset of envy.
You can hear Butho on the decks at Music Makes Glasgow, on Oct 12th. Tickets HERE

An Interview with Kieron

Kieron Gilfillan, a talented young guitarist we're working with,  recently had the opportunity to visit a recording studio with his tutor, Nicky Murray. Kieron spent time recording a mix of original compositions and classical pieces. In this interview, he shares his thoughts on the experience—from what it was like to step into the studio to how it felt to bring his creative ideas to life.

Kieron how would you describe the day for someone who doesn't know what happened?
We were recording in Carlton Studios, recording a few of my compositions (A Day In November, Tarrega, and A Day in December), and a couple of well known classical pieces: Cathedral and Asturias. It was good to have the photographer as well, the pictures turned out good.

How did you find the whole process of being in the studio?
It was good. I didn't realise how good I could sound until we were listening back in the control room. It was helpful to have Nicky there, he kept me in tune. It was good to have the photographer there as well, the pictures turned out good.

How does it feel to hear yourself recorded professionally?
It was surprising listening back to the recordings afterwards. The quality and the clarity was impressive, particularly in the more intense sections of Asturias.

What’s next for you Kieron? Do you have any goals or targets in terms of your career or development?

Probably just like to learn more stuff on the guitar. Classical mainly. I'd like to learn more theory as well. I'd like to release music someday.
Kieron’s time in the studio is just the beginning, and we’re excited to see where his music will take him next. To hear the results of his hard work and creativity, check out his original song A Day in December on SoundCloud. Stay tuned for more from this talented young artist!
