We're delighted that The Islanders - a group of talented students from the University of Glasgow - have chosen The Sound Lab as their nominated charity partner for their upcoming fundraising concert on March 1st.
About the Islanders
The Islanders were formed by Musical Director Anne Hornman in 2022 for a production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Since then, the band has done charity concerts and other performances at the University of Glasgow and is now growing into a performance platform where young creatives can collaborate to make music and raise money for charity. Their next concert, “Come Together” is on the 1st of March, with The Sound Lab Glasgow.
About The Sound Lab
Based in Glasgow, the Sound Lab provides free music education and creative mentoring for groups who wouldn't otherwise be able to access them. Covering the full creative spectrum from show tunes to Chopin, hip-hop and house, the Sound Lab operate an entirely youth-led model: students learn what they want to, at a time and place that suits them best.
Their aim is to overcome those barriers that can prevent certain young people from accessing creative opportunities (e.g. lack of funds, transport challenges, language barrier, lack of an instrument). As well as providing lessons that are free at the point of use, they also provide instrument / software loans, translator support, songbooks and more. Priority groups for The Sound Lab in 2025 are: care experienced children and young people; children and young people with a disability / ASN; and those with lived experience of displacement (i.e. asylum seekers / refugees).
