What we do
Based in and around Glasgow since 2003, we’re a grassroots group providing creative opportunity to all sorts of folk in need of expression – be that through sound production, song writing, film making or making it up as we go along and having a wee jam. We all have it in us in some form or another, and The Sound Lab is about harnessing creativity, providing a platform for people who wouldn’t normally have access to the tools they’d like. Our projects involve collaborating with talented teachers and youth workers who all share a passion for music. With every year that the charity passes through (13 and counting) it’s clear there is an incredible standard of talent and beauty in and amongst some of the “disadvantaged” areas of our community.
Our aim is to engage, educate and encourage; some of our alumni have gone on to form their own bands, even achieving success in Scotland and further afield. Our links with local venues, labels, artists, great quality facilities, music shops etc. have helped young people to gain valuable work experience in professional recording studios and/or take their first steps in live performance.
Our projects cover a wide spectrum, including urban/electronic music production, drums, guitar, keyboard, samba drumming, DJ skills, MC skills, song writing, film making, photography, graffiti art and editing, audio recording, live performance, production and recording. Anything creative, you can find it here!
The Sound Lab was an idea born out of memory of an inspirational young man, Kevin, from Tollcross, with our main focus being to provide a creative outlet and fun environment for young people around the East End of the city. Nowadays we are looking to expand our services and be inclusive of more people in need of this creative helping hand- any age, race, faith, sexuality, gender or shoe size.
