June Blog
Scottish Refugee Festival
April was a busy month for us here at the Sound Lab. We kicked off the month at Big Noise Govanhill’s Easter holiday club, where our tutor Lisa Meech, encouraged the young people to transfer their existing musicianship skills into the realm of songwriting. Simultaneously, our new tutor NKem led an arts workshop where the young people were able to try their hand at some screen-printing onto tote bags, which they were able to take home! It was a great week, and we hope to continue our work with Big Noise in the future! Here are our tutors looking very pleased with their creations!
Join us for a day of connection, creativity and solidarity as we celebrate the rich tapestry of our collective cultures. For further information, and to sign up for the event, click here!
A Busy Month for Steg G
It has been a busy few weeks for our rap and DJ tutor Steg! Last month, he kicked off our production and rap workshops at Quarrier's Homeless Stopover Service, and they have been a big hit. Steg has shared that the young participants are enthusiastic and eager to learn, with diverse musical tastes from drill to musicals. In these sessions Steg has encouraged the young people to explore the world of beat-making and MCing, helping them to overcoming some initial nervousness in front of the mic. Over the coming weeks, Steg will look to combine the varied interests of the young people into some collaborative recording and music making. We look forward to sharing some of their tracks and seeing where their creativity goes next!
In addition, Steg has continued his work at Turf Community Centre in Cardonald, leading on hip-hop sessions for young people, where he has taught them how to mix their favourite song, discovering a broad range of musical tastes from hip-hop to K-pop. Steg has also encouraged the young people to try some freestyle rap and singing along with popular tunes, creating a fun and expressive atmosphere for all. In a similar vein, Steg has continued to nourish the talent among the drill collective G52 in our partnership with Community Renewal. Here they are in action:

It has truly been a busy month for Steg, and for the Sound Lab! We have loved the positive feedback from these workshops and are proud to see the young people’s ideas, creativity and self-expression as the driving force behind our work! Here at the Sound Lab, we are committed to making music and creativity accessible and enjoyable for all young people. If you think a young person, you support could benefit from access for free music and creativity tuition, please do now hesitate to get in contact at [email protected] .

Radio Shows

We had a very special instalment on our May radio show on Clyde Built Radio. Our tutors Laurie Pitt and Nick Sigsworth put together the soundbites taken from time with the young people at the Concrete Garden. Listen back here to immerse yourself in the live sounds of laughter, chit chat and music from the young people as they enjoy the great outdoors, while leading and hosting their own radio show!

Also in May, an equally special show blessed our ears, as our chair Paul Sullivan was joined by our secure care coordinator and tutor Lisa Meech on Radio Buena Vida to discuss all things secure care! Listen along to find out how the Sound Lab #KeepsThePromise and uses music and creativity as a force of positive change in the lives of the young people we support in St Mary’s Kenmure, and The Good Shepard Centre. It is a great discussion topped off with an equally great mix of tunes carefully curated by Paul! Listen back here.
Coming up in June, coming up this month on Radio Buena Vida, we have Nico Ndlovu, a comedian, MC and host of the SIYAKHULUMA We Talk podcast on the show. Nico will join our very own Adam Khettabi to chat about music, and the work Nico is doing to elevate migrant voices and share refugee stories. It promises to be a great show, and you don’t want to miss it! Tune in on the 15th of June from 3-4pm!

The Sound Lab X SoundPlay

This month, we have an exciting series of workshops in partnership with SoundPlay Projects, a fantastic organisation that specialises in interactive music and sensory play. Our tutors will be teaming up with Bal and Ewan of SoundPlay to combine their tuition expertise with the innovative interactive instruments of SoundPlay, including their SoundDome, SoundConsoles, and SoundBeds! Over the course of June, we will work with the young people from Abercorn School and support them to create, play, and immerse themselves in the world of interactive music. Our tutors have visited SoundPlay’s HQ to get a feel for the gear and have a go themselves. We can’t wait to get the young people along and see what they create!
